Equality Michigan Executive Director, Erin Knott, says that, while the Michigan Civil Rights Commission had clarified that one could not be discriminated against based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression under the Elliott Larson Civil Rights Act, some businesses and municipalities do not have non-discrimination policies that include discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, leaving a blind spot in critical laws and ordinances that protect people of many different backgrounds in our state, and that changes need to be made in order to protect more people in the LGBTQ+ and other marginalized populations.
