Rochelle Riley, Director of Arts and Culture at the Office of Arts, Culture and Entrepreneurship for the City of Detroit and Author of “That They Lived” says that the book was inspired by photographs of African-American women who changed the world and a young woman who learned lessons from these figures, and that she tracked down the person behind these social media posts during Black History Month in 2017 in order to tell the stories of incredible, African-American people who continue to have an impact on our society and inspire the next generation with their stories.
