Dr. Russell Faust, Medical Director of the Oakland County Health Division, explained that COVID variants develop similarly to flu variants, with subtle changes occurring each time a virus particle multiplies, leaving minor errors that eventually develop into varied viruses. When these virus variants are checked and can be vaccinated against (particularly, against the strongest forms), they can prevent epidemic and pandemic spread, which is why it is critical that society limit the spread of COVID-19 while society gets vaccinated, and that we do not let up the urgency once our individual community and country is vaccinated to ensure that we vaccinate all humanity to prevent a resurgence of COVID-19.
